This week we have just received delivery of the Foresight Sports GC Quad launch monitor. This industry leading technology is an update for us and delivers the most accurate and trusted ball and clubhead data on the market today.

Recently just launched in the Links Golf Lab, SIK putters as used by Bryson DuChambeau are now being custom fitted.  SIK stands for Sudy In Kinematics, with their background in science the brand ties into the Lab nicely. With their Descending Loft Technology on the face the putters help players launch the ball consistently. They have four flat surfaces that are milled into our putter face. Each plane descends in loft by 1° from the top of the face to the bottom of the face. When your shaft is pressed at impact the ball contact will be higher on the face, same is true in reverse. DLT delivers consistent launch angles from putt to putt which lead to more consistent and predictable rolls.

SIK’s philosophy is

‘THE PROBLEM NOBODY can match the shaft angle from address to impact at any consistent rate. This leads to inconsistent launch angles, which result in poor distance control.  Some of the worlds best players such as Bryson DeChambeau has been using his arm lock SIK for a while. Recently Jason Day has been testing out the Flo model too. It’s an exciting time for the Lab to be joining the SIK team and becoming a fitting centre for them.

After watching the best players in the world battle it out on a brutal Torrey Pines this weekend, there’s no such thing as a U.S. Open cheat code. To tame one of the toughest tests in golf, you need some luck, a Teflon-coated psyche and a combination of dialled-in gear and a mastery of the course setup. For many players in the field, the latter can be achieved with an assist from high-tech devices and training aids that can help chart a potential blueprint for success.

1. Launch monitors

Launch monitors are as ubiquitous as an alignment stick on Tour. Nearly every pro at Torrey Pines is toting around a high-tech unit from Foresight, Trackman or Flightscope to get a better idea of stock carry yardages and how current conditions could dictate certain shots. DeChambeau and Phil Mickelson are just a few of the high-profile names who take the device from the range to the course to gather real-time data.

“We’re definitely trying to look at normalized data so we can get a good understanding of how much the wind is affecting the golf ball in this environment,” DeChambeau told GOLF.com. “For example, if the [Foresight GC Quad] device tells you I’m hitting it 120 yards, and then on radar, on FlightScope, it’s saying it went 125 yards, well, obviously there’s 5 yards of wind. That’s how we utilize it one way.”

2. Quintic Ball Roll

While it isn’t as commonplace as a launch monitor, several pros (DeChambeau included) use Quintic’s high-speed camera to track the head and ball through the impact zone. For someone like DeChambeau, the device gives him a better idea of launch, topspin and speed, which comes in handy at a major on Poa annua grass where altering putter loft to optimize launch can be a significant advantage.

The wait is over , Boris has allowed us to play in fourballs and we can’t wait to get going again. Dust the clubs off and don’t worry where that first tee shot goes.

We look forward to welcoming you back to the Links Golf Club on Monday. The forecast for the reopening is for fantastic Suffolk/Cambridgeshire spring sunshine. Normally there wouldn’t be any excuses for poor golf in such conditions, but I think we will need to get rid of those snap hooks and thinned chip shots again like it is winter rust! Or book a golf lesson with one of our Pro’s.

From this Monday, the first step back will be Click and Collect available from the Pro Shop door between 10-3pm every day . Stage 2 from Monday 12th April, The Links Golf Lab resumes coaching and Club fitting once again. Golf coaching and fittings were given the green light to start on the 29th March and indoor studios, the 12th April.

The Links Golf Lab falls into the category of indoor facilities, so we will have to wait an extra 2 week before we open our doors to you. Never the less, we will be coaching on the range or on the short game greens from the 29th March.

Distance Control and Green Reading Putting Clinics 2021

Looking to sort out your putting issues once and for all in 2021, then check out Jonny’s programme of putting clinics available from April. Build a stroke that will stand up not only on the practice putting green but where it matters most on the course.

There are 3 main aspects of putting which are, having a good putting concept which allows you to start the ball on line. Controlling the distance of the golf ball and finally green reading.

Reading books with Jon Rahm

The new Callaway staff player, Jon Rahm was recently interviewed at this weeks WGC event at Concession GC on players having green reading books. His view on the matter was that he doesn’t think green reading books should be allowed on tour as reading a green is a talent and a skill that can be developed. The Spaniard thinks that the books, which show slopes on the greens to help players and caddies with reads, take away from the game.

Jon Rahm was quoted by Golf Monthly saying,

“I don’t use those books. My caddie gets them,” the World No.2 said ahead of the WGC-Workday Championship at The Concession.

“I don’t look at them because I’m a feel player, I trust what I see.

“If I have a question, I’ll ask him, and he might look at it if we’re in doubt.

“I’ve never spoken of this, I have to be honest, I don’t think they should be allowed. That’s my opinion.’

Green reading is a skill in its own right and one part of what you need to become a great putter. Jonny will be releasing his green reading classes this week so keep your eyes out for those dates. Its a Ten for Odyssey's New Putter Range

Odyssey Ten will be available Custom Fitted at the Links Golf Lab

This weeks blog discusses the return of one of golf’s most popular designs, the Odyssey 2-Ball. This putter combines the Tour proven 2-Ball design with the Ten head shape, creating a super high MOI (resistance to twist) putter. Plus by adding Odyssey’s new Stroke Lab shaft and their Microhinge Star insert, we feel they have designed the ultimate Odyssey putter.

This technology packed putter comes with the Microhinge face insert aiding a more consistent roll and the new Stroke Lab shaft to help with tempo. Compared to the previous Stroke Lab shafts, the new designs are slightly lighter and stiffer according to the company.

 Odyssey’s Triple Track alignment system also makes a return in the Ten design. The 2-ball and triple track designs are recognised as the ultimate alignment aids for putters on the market.

We feel the new Ten putters are the perfect partner for the golfer who struggles with speed control. With a high proportion of the weight positioned towards the back of the clubhead and away from the clubface this helps to avoid any loss of energy with off centred strikes, a big advantage to improving speed control.

 There is a common misconception that larger putter heads help with hitting your start lines as their less resistance to twisting on off centred strikes. This, however, is not strictly true as has been proven by Quintic Ball Roll studies.

These studies recognise that a blade type putter design helps equally with starting the ball on its intended line but tend to lose more energy with any mis-strikes. Watch out for Jonny, our putting specialist, who will be posting a video on this in a future blog.
